Episode 8: No beach for the conductor

Orchestrating seven AI agents keeps the business leader at the helm, busier than ever. No arms, no legs: the beach can wait.

Laurent Cuénoud
Graphic-novel illustration: an overwhelmed, shaven-headed business leader raises both hands behind a cluttered desk, surrounded by seven screens showing his seven AI agents in blue and by three people asking for his attention at once, in a Swiss open-plan office bathed in daylight.

Orchestrating a team of seven agents takes serious discipline. All the more so when those agents work with one another and operate across every department, at every level of the company.

What they can do borders on the miraculous. Taking charge of entire processes, end to end. Cloning the boss and multiplying what he can get done tenfold. And, when needed, analysing themselves to improve the way they run.

It sounds like a dream: they do the work of ten, and I head off to the beach.

Except it doesn’t work that way. Far from setting me free, they keep me at the helm. They need me at the top of my game, on every front at once: sales, finance, organisation, administration. Everything rests on flawless discipline in how the work is structured.

And then there’s the obvious thing we all forget. These agents have no arms or legs.

They don’t go out and meet the client. They come with us to meetings, present on a laptop screen. But the client relationship, running the projects, implementing the solutions, at our end and at the client’s: all of that stays in human hands. Strongly backed by the agents, yes. Spared the time and the skill it takes, no. The human team remains the only one with arms, legs and the power to decide.

These agents multiply productivity to an extraordinary, unprecedented degree. In return, they demand constant attention, discipline and commitment.

So no, you don’t head off to the beach and leave them to work alone. Even with the best AI and the best agents, that’s an illusion, and one to dispel quickly, because it bears no resemblance to reality.
