In brief

What is Zoho Catalyst?

Zoho Catalyst is Zoho's serverless pro-code development platform, with built-in Zia AI services (OCR, NLP, vision, prediction, generation) and European hosting. It lets you build custom applications, microservices and APIs without managing infrastructure. Djtal, the operational AI specialist for Swiss companies, has taken seven applications into production on Catalyst since 2021, among the first deployments in Switzerland.

Why Catalyst

Pro-code, serverless, AI-native and hosted in Europe.

Catalyst started out as a serverless platform. Zoho has since built its Zia AI services into it, so AI is part of the platform's foundation. For a company that wants a custom application without assembling its own AI infrastructure or depending on the large American cloud providers, the balance tips towards Catalyst.

01 · Zia, native AI

Zoho's AI services (OCR, text classification, vision, prediction with AutoML, generation with ConvoKraft) are available directly from Catalyst code. The keys and the AI infrastructure are included in the platform you already pay for. There is nothing to assemble.

02 · European sovereignty

European data centres (Amsterdam, Dublin), with ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 certifications. Your data stays within Europe, which matters to a Swiss company when its own customers ask where their data is held.

03 · Integrated, or independent

Catalyst connects natively to Zoho CRM, Creator, Books and Desk, but it can also be used on its own, as a modern PaaS. You no longer need the usual stack of AWS, Vercel, an AI provider and a DevOps team.

Catalyst vs assembling it yourself

Catalyst compared with AWS Lambda and other cloud stacks.

A custom AI application can be built by assembling a cloud provider, an AI service and an orchestration layer. Catalyst brings these pieces together. The table compares them criterion by criterion.

Djtal recommends Catalyst when native AI, European hosting and serverless operation count for your project. When your situation calls for it, we point you to another route.

Catalyst at Djtal

In production at Swiss companies since 2021.

We have worked on Catalyst since its first versions. Some of our internal tools depend on it as well. Here are some of the applications in active production.

FRC

Fédération romande des consommateurs · consumer federation for French-speaking Switzerland

Several Creator and Catalyst applications are in use, including a fast search for member services and comparative-testing management built into its website for professionals.

OLF

Book distribution and publishing

A secure B2B portal and extended customer service, where AI assists with the first-pass analysis and categorisation of tickets.

Catalyst is one of the two building blocks of our custom AI applications service, alongside Zoho Creator. It is part of our wider expertise in Zoho One. When a process needs to run continuously, the application gives way to a supervised AI agent.

Frequently asked questions

Questions to ask when evaluating Zoho Catalyst.

What is Zoho Catalyst?

Zoho Catalyst is Zoho's serverless pro-code development platform, with the Zia AI services built in (OCR, NLP, vision, prediction, generation). It lets you build custom applications, microservices and APIs without managing infrastructure. It integrates natively with the Zoho ecosystem or runs on its own.

Is Zoho Catalyst hosted in Europe?

Yes. Zoho Catalyst runs on European data centres (Amsterdam and Dublin), with ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 certifications. For a Swiss company subject to data protection rules, this means its data and processing stay within Europe.

What is the difference between Zoho Creator and Zoho Catalyst?

Zoho Creator is a low-code platform for quickly building business applications based on forms, workflows and reports. Zoho Catalyst is pro-code and is built for fully custom development, such as complex logic, APIs, microservices and operational AI. The two are often combined in a single project.

Which should you choose, Zoho Catalyst or AWS Lambda?

Zoho Catalyst includes native Zia AI, European hosting and Zoho integration with no DevOps, a clear time saving when those strengths matter. AWS Lambda has the edge when you need a very broad cloud ecosystem or hyperscale capacity, especially if a DevOps team is already in place. Djtal recommends one or the other depending on your context.

Do you need to be using Zoho One already to adopt Catalyst?

No. Zoho Catalyst integrates natively with Zoho One when you use it, but it also runs entirely independently, as a modern PaaS. You can adopt it for a specific need without migrating all your IT systems.

Does Djtal have hands-on experience of Zoho Catalyst?

Yes. Djtal has been developing on Catalyst since 2021, from the first versions of the platform, and has taken seven applications into production, among the first deployments in Switzerland. We know the strengths of the platform as well as its pitfalls, which is why we compare Catalyst with AWS Lambda criterion by criterion.
