Invoicing · Switzerland 2026

Where e-invoicing stands in Switzerland in 2026.

QR-bill, eBill, public procurement and the European rules on their way. What is mandatory, what changes this year, and how to automate your invoicing without an unnecessary layer of software.

In brief

Is e-invoicing mandatory in Switzerland?

E-invoicing is the exchange of invoices in digital form, from QR-bill and eBill to structured formats such as Peppol. It remains voluntary between Swiss businesses in 2026; federal B2G is mandatory above CHF 5,000. Structured addresses become the rule from 30 September 2026. Djtal, the operational AI specialist for Swiss companies, automates compliant invoicing.

The channels

QR-bill, eBill, PDF, structured formats.

E-invoicing in Switzerland covers four channels: QR-bill, eBill, PDF by email and structured formats such as Peppol. The main channels, and who each one suits.

ChannelWhat it isSuited to
QR-billThe Swiss standard that replaced the red and orange payment slips in October 2022. It includes a payment part with a Swiss QR Code.Any business that invoices in Switzerland.
eBillA SIX service that sends the invoice straight into the customer's e-banking, where they approve it and pay it in one click. It has more than four million users in Switzerland (SIX, August 2026).Invoicing private customers, or Swiss companies that use eBill.
PDF / emailThe PDF invoice remains legal and widespread, often sent together with the QR-bill. It is simple, but of limited automation potential on the receiving side.An acceptable minimum while you move to structured channels.
Structured formats (Peppol, ZUGFeRD, XML)Machine-readable invoices, exchanged from system to system. They are the standard for federal B2G e-invoicing and the direction the EU is taking.Federal public procurement and businesses that work with the EU.

What is changing

Three shifts to watch in 2026.

01 · Structured address

November 2025: unstructured addresses removed from the QR-bill. 30 September 2026: banks reject pain.001 orders with unstructured addresses. 13 November 2026: SIC 5.3 release makes the structured address universal. Check that your software generates structured addresses across the whole payment chain.

02 · eBill takes hold

eBill, the SIX service built into Swiss e-banking, passed four million users at the end of June 2026 and is aiming for more than 100 million transactions over the year (SIX figures, August 2026). Adopting it improves your collection rate and speed, without imposing a format on your customers.

03 · The European wave

The ViDA directive (VAT in the Digital Age) and national obligations (France, Italy, Germany, Spain) are making structured e-invoicing the general rule in the EU between 2024 and 2030. A Swiss company active in these markets should be able to issue and receive these formats.

The rules evolve and depend on your situation. This page gives a general overview. For legal or tax advice, or a specific obligation, check with your fiduciary firm (accounting and tax firm) or the relevant authority.

Our role

Comply first, then automate the whole cycle.

Getting compliant is the minimum. The gain comes from automating the whole cycle, from generating the compliant QR-bill in your Zoho system or your existing ERP to sending it out, tracking payments and issuing reminders without manual intervention. Djtal sets this up and brings in AI agents for reconciliation and for sorting documents, under human oversight (see the AI finance agent).

Frequently asked questions

E-invoicing in Switzerland: answers with the dates that matter.

Is e-invoicing mandatory in Switzerland in 2026?

In B2B, the answer is no. E-invoicing remains voluntary between Swiss companies in 2026. It has been mandatory since 2016 for federal B2G, meaning suppliers to the Swiss Confederation, on contracts above CHF 5,000. In the EU, however, the ViDA directive (VAT in the Digital Age) is pushing towards general adoption by 2030.

What is changing for the QR-bill in 2026?

For the QR-bill itself, the structured address is already the norm: unstructured addresses (known as combined addresses) were removed from the standard in November 2025. The two 2026 deadlines concern payment flows. From 30 September 2026, Swiss banks reject pain.001 payment orders with unstructured addresses, and the SIC 5.3 release (Swiss Interbank Clearing) of 13 November 2026 will make the structured address universal. Check that your software issues structured addresses across the whole payment chain.

Are Swiss companies affected by European e-invoicing obligations?

Indirectly, yes. The EU's ViDA directive (VAT in the Digital Age) and the national obligations already under way (France, Italy, Germany and Spain, between 2024 and 2027) require structured e-invoicing from many businesses in the EU. A Swiss company that invoices European customers has an interest in being able to issue and receive these formats.
